Ionone beta occurs naturally in violets and roses and is extremely important in the smell of both. In violets it occurs in high concentrations and is one of the characteristic odourants responsible for the smell. In rose it's found in very low levels, but still has a significant impact on the overall smell due to the potency of the molecule. Alone it possess a violet smell with raspberry and woody nuances. Like other ionones, it quickly induces olfactory fatigue, meaning the more sniffs you take without resting your nose, the less you will smell it. Paradoxically it can be detected by a fresh nose in trace amounts from a distance, speaking to its diffusivity. Overall, this material is a must have, both for its ability to add volume, diffusion and projection to fragrances and its use in violet, rose, raspberry and tea accords, amongst others.
